Hours later, countless boxes opened, searched then closed, Mace had found … nothing. He had the last box on his lap, with some of the oldest papers he’d found to date.

He pulled out a file but his eyes got heavy and he decided to just close them a moment before he took a look.

A moment turned into hours. There was light outside the basement window when he finally woke up from a dream … a dream starring Zoe Wallace, co-starring him.

Coffee.

He needed coffee to wake up and remove any lingering taste of Zoe from his mind.

He decided to take the file with him and go through it over at Pete’s.

Zoe had been right when she said the small restaurant with the simple name would soon feel like home.

He’d settled into a booth and was leafing through the papers, coffee in hand, when a voice—a decidedly female voice—said, “What a morning. You wouldn’t believe it. That darned new Sheriff gave me another ticket already. The man starts his rounds early just so he can ruin my morning. And speaking of mornings, you’re up mighty early for a city slicker.”

“Clover.” Mace said. He felt a stab of guilt over how he’d treated her on their date. “About the other night—”

“Don’t worry about it,” she said, brushing away his apologies as she took the seat opposite him. “Sometimes the spark is there, sometimes it’s not. So what are you doing?”

“Looking through old files from the Herald.”

“What for?”

Mace wasn’t sure if she’d heard about the Centennial that might not be, and he refused to start rumors, so he settled for saying, “Just looking for any information on the town and its beginnings. I’m not only covering the Centennial, but looking for information on Hiram for a short documentary series I do.”

“If you want insights into the town’s origins, I might be able to help.”

“How?”

“There’s always been a Clover in the family since the first Clover founded the college.” She paused and added, “I know that’s not going to help you. But the fact that the women in my family are notorious for keeping journals, just might. Big, long, extensive journals. And it just so happens I have a number of them that the first Clover wrote.”

“Really? Do you think I could see them?”

She smiled. “I think that could be arranged. After you’re done eating, stop over at The General Store. I’ll have them for you.”

“Thanks so much.” He leaned across the table kissed her lightly on her cheek. He realized that he felt nothing over the kiss … nothing like what he’d felt with a similar kiss with Zoe.

He didn’t want to think about that. So he just said, “And thanks for understanding about the other night.”

He was glad Clover understood him, because he certainly didn’t understand himself. All he knew was that since the moment he saw Zoe Wallace and her bad makeover, she was all he could think about.

“Hey, I don’t know if there’s anything in them that will help. I don’t think I’ve looked at them since I was in my teens.
